Vedi Napoli puoi muori! - See Naples and die!

Even if I`m writing this note almost a month after visiting Naples, I can easily recollect my memories related to what I saw and what I felt. I`m going to start with the negative sides of this place and finish with the positive ones.

Contrary to Potenza, in which I spent a certain amount of time, Naples stinks. It REALLY stinks! The city is much more polluted, there are piles of rubbish scattered on the streets. I also remember a dead pigeon pressed down into the pavement... Of course, it could happen in every place in the world, but,  it was not an extraordinary view there :-P

Besides, the pavements are rather narrow, hence there is not much space for pedestrians. What is more, sometimes these passages are blocked by the cars. Vehicles are left in a non-parking zone, e.g. near the zebra crossing or on the pavement... My friend and me were walking down a narrow traffic island (situated between two terribly busy roads). We felt as though we had been in the middle of the jungle :-P

Our primary aim of the trip was the harbour. First, we went in the wrong direction because we got to the industrial part. As a consequence, we had to come back (down the narrow traffic island). Finally, we arrived at the port. We took a few pictures and sunbathed for 40 minutes (we were lucky because we could sunbathe on February 17th :-) ). There was +30`C! Unfortunately, I couldn`t take the photo of the bay because one of the guards suggested us paying "extra money" for coming closer and doing so. Let`s leave it without any comments.. (therefore I have got only one shitty picture).

Then we saw Castel Nuovo near which you are likely to come across both the homeless begging for cash and the emigrants selling Chinese staff. Nevertheless, the castel itself is a breathtaking monument :-) It turned out to be a convenient vantage point. I was observing the passers-by and took up street photography for the time being.

Now, it is time to draw attention to the positive sides of Naples. I think I may just enumerate them and add some short comments:

1) architecture - especially castles, the Galleria Umberto I (which reminds me of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan) and the metro station near Stazione Centrale (unfortunately I didn`t take any photo).

2) even if I don`t know the Neapolitan language, I could communicate in my quasi-(standard) Italian.

3) food - of course it is a must to buy, at least, a piece of Neapolitan pizza. A friend of mine tried patatosa for the first time (Sicilian pizza with French fries). A typical Neapolitan pizza should consist of San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella di Bufala Campana and basilica (three colours of the Italian flag: green, white and red).

4) Despite various stories about robbery, we spent there half a day and left the city safe and sound!

And I will give some advice for those who want to visit Naples: you need at least two days to see all necessary monuments due to the fact that they are situated in different districts of the city and you need enough time to take metro, busses or trams.

I don`t know if I would like to come back to Naples, after my first visit I have got mixed feelings about it...

ciao caffè brutto!

I had a chance to participate in my friend`s birthday party at the weekend. This nice meeting was held in Lagopesole, the city close to Potenza. I went there together with the friends, Monica and Massimo.

The guests were friendly, whereas food delicious. I couldn`t resist trying panzerottini - mini-version of panzerotti). What is more, the birtday cake was not only creatively-made, but it also tasted heavenly! Even though I had baked crescent rolls with chocolate (according to my Polish recipe), I received the packed lunch :-) If you are in Italy, especially in the south, forget about your diet!

Furthermore, what I learnt at the party is the way Italian people prepare their coffee in the so-called moca (caffettiera)
You should draw attention to the following aspects:
1) the amount of water - not too much and not too little,
2) the amount of coffee - we should form a coffee mould, then pressure will be better,
3) we shouldn`t put the kettle on high heat.

Remember!
1)  the first drops of coffee are the strongest ones,
2) when we buy a new Italian coffee maker, the first three-five cups of coffee (they don`t taste well) might be pour out to improve and streghten the aroma of further cups of coffee,
3) When we buy a new jar of coffee, shortly after its first opening, we should keep it in the fridge. As a result, the aroma of coffee remains the same.
4) We should clean the coffee maker only in running water without dishwashing liquid. Otherwise, we`ll get rid of aroma..
(What’s done is done! I have been living in Italy for 2,5 months, I bought one moca and now I drink only Italian coffee... ciao caffè brutto!).

I got to know a few Italian gestures at the party, but I devote another note to this topic.
Buona giornata ragazzi! :-)

W weekend miałam przyjemność uczestniczyć w imprezie urodzinowej znajomego. Było naprawdę wesoło. Przyjęcie odbyło się w miejscowości Lagopesole, w pobliżu Potenzy. Pojechałam tam razem z przyjaciółmi, Monicą i Massimo.

2) jeśli kupimy włoski zaparzacz do kawy, pierwsze 3-5 kaw możemy spokojnie wylać, żeby "wyrobić" dzbanek,
 Buona giornata ragazzi! :-)

My Italian addiction

5 things that I can`t do without in Italy and I`ll miss them when I come back to Poland:
  • fresh air in the morning - as soon as I wake up, I open the window and admire a breathtaking view and inhale fresh air, (świeże powietrze - jak tylko się budzę, otwieram okno, podziwiam widoki i wdycham świeże powietrze),

  •  the smell of freshly-ground and brewed coffee - I can`t resist at least one cup of cappuccino in the bar in the morning, (zapach świeżo-mielonej i parzonej kawy - nie mogę się obyć chociażby bez jednej filiżanki cappuccino w barze z rana),

  • limoncello - an Italian lemon liqueur produced in Southern Italy. There are also some other types of limoncello, e.g. Pistachiocello (with pistachio nuts), Meloncello (with cantaloupe) and Fragoncello (with strawberries), (limoncello, włoski cytrynowy likier produkowany głównie w Południowych Włoszech. Wyróżnia się kilka odmian limoncello, np. pistachiocello - z orzechami, Meloncello - z kantalupy i Fragoncello - z truskawkami).

(the picture & recipe: http://istruzionixluso.altervista.org/blog/come-preparare-il-limoncello-ricetta/)
  • panzerotto -  made of soft dough, usually with tomato and mozzarella filling. This is a small version of calzone or closed pizza. It might be fried or baked.
 (picture: http://www.saporetipico.it/ricetta660/puglia/panzerottipugliesi.html)

  • pistachio nuts and pistachio-flavoured products, e.g. ice cream, bars, chocolate, pesto, cream. (pistacje i produkty o smaku pistacjowym tj. lody, batoniki, czekolada, pesto, krem).

  •  excellent views - every part of Italy is different, thus I love discovering new places in this country.

The cuisine of Basilicata

The cuisine of Basilicata

Last Sunday turned out to be a brand-new experience, particularly for my taste buds. Between two trips we had a two-hour break for lunch. Initially, I thought that there would be only one dish. Whereas, I lost my count of the meals, but I guess there were five of them.

Firstly, I tried local meat products (insaccati). Secondly, ravioli in mushroom sauce, home-made pasta with tomato sauce (ragù), croquettes, `baked balls` (scropedda) and meat dish were served. (I excused myself. If I had eaten it, I would have died. Furthermore, I`m not very keen on meat). Thirdly, I tried local cheese (pecorino) and dried pepper (cruschi, which can be eaten as crisps). I forgot to mention about our drinks: orange juice with sparkling alcohol as well as local wine. The meeting was crowned with dessert (the cake, torta ricotta e pera, similar to Polish `sernik`). Some people found extra space in their stomachs for coffee..

Italian friends claimed that I couldn`t catch up with them as far as eating is concerned. I felt as though I had been at the birthday, name day or wedding party. Though, it was a typical Sunday lunch for people from Basilicata. I would die after eating so much food every single weekend! :-D

Jedzenie w Basylicacie

shopping, beer and coffee

#1
I woke up early in the morning to do small shopping before my work. Nonetheless, it ended in utter fiasco due to the fact that all shops in Italy, apart from bars and the bakery, are closed till 9:00. Contrary, in Poland, supermarkets are open at 8:00 am or even earlier. My last hope was the university canteen, where I bought a tiny croissant called cornetto and a bottle of mineral water...

#2
But, let`s wait! While taking the bottle out of the fridge, I was in complete shock because I noticed beer! In Poland it is impossible to buy alcohol at the university, whereas, here in Potenza, it is something normal to get beer in the canteen. Not to mention about cigarettes.

#3
I usually have one-hour break from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Then, I go with my colleagues to the bar for lunch. Today I ate a sandwich (with salami, mozzarella and tomatoes) called panino, but, what I really love is panzerotto. They prepared an American coffee for me, I`m amazingly grateful for it! I like their espresso, but I sometimes miss a huge cup of coffee :-)

#4
The following cultural difference is not saying "thank you" after finishing the meal. In Poland, it is polite to thank for food, whereas here, people asked me "Why do you thank? For what?". They couldn`t understand this kind of behaviour until I explained it to them :-)

 -------------------------------------------------------typical breakfast ------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#1
